Spring 1

English Purposeful End Point - Discussion Texts

The children wrote their discussion text based on the topic 'Children should wear school uniform'. They then shared their discussion text with some of the Year 2 children.

Prehistoric Artwork

Linked with our 'Stone Age' history topic, the children explored prehistoric art. They looked at cave paintings and learned that the Stone Age people painted animals and hunters to depict their daily lives. The children also looked at creating their own paint using spices, flour and water. The final piece was a native British animal painted onto a 'cave wall' made from lentils, bulgur wheat and couscous.

Scientist - William Smith

Year 3's scientist is William Smith. He was a geologist who was credited for creating the first geological map of Britain. He was fascinated by rocks and the ages of fossils. He found that the further deep in the ground the fossils were, the older they were. He become known as the 'Father of Geology'.

RE - Building the Kingdom of God

Our focus in RE has been 'How can we build the Kingdom of God?'. The children have explored what is meant by the Kingdom of God and how we can achieve it. On the cut-out birds and leaves, children wrote down how they've built the Kingdom of God.

Maths Purposeful End Point - Length and Perimeter

The children were combining maths and science in this unit's Purposeful End Point. They were investigating 'Do people with longer femurs, jump further?'. They worked in groups to test this hypothesis. They measured their femurs and then they measured how far they could do a long jump. Finally, they ordered the jumps from shortest to furthest. The children decided that there's no correlation between the length of the femur and the jump distance as the size and strength of the muscle may impact this.

Stig of the Dump

Our fiction text for this half-term was Stig of the Dump. The children focused on using inverted commas to create speech between characters. They also produced setting and character descriptions for our Stone Age character. The children then innovated the story to create their own narrative.

Maths Purposeful End Point - Multiplication and Division

Children worked in pairs to complete real life multiplication and division questions.
