Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Mrs Smith - Class Teacher

Mrs Wright - Class Teacher

Mrs Natha - Teaching Assistant (AM)

All members of staff in Year 5 work together to provide your child with a high-quality education, aiming to make lessons 'Meaningful, Memorable and Motivating'. We strive to make learning enjoyable in Year 5 and we aim to incorporate the 'Seven Skills of the Steward' in our learning to ensure that all children succeed as young learners of the future. Those skills are:

Team-working   †   Problem-solving   †   Creativity   †   Peace-making

Empathy   †   Resilience   †   Gratitude

In Year 5 our super skill focus this year is Problem-solving.

Homework

Home learning is an important part of children’s education which we aim to make accessible for all children. Please encourage your child to complete their home learning every week as it will have an impact on their learning in school.

All homework will now be set online using the following platforms: Maths Shed, Spelling Shed and Oxford Reading Buddy. This means that we will no longer be sending home printed worksheets.

The focus will be on short, sharp bursts of regular practice of key skills, particularly times tables, spelling and reading comprehension. These platforms allow us to tailor tasks to your child’s level and monitor progress more effectively.

Spellings - We will continue to use Spelling Shed where your child can practise their spellings through fun and interactive games.

Reading - Your child is expected to read on a nightly basis for between 10-15 minutes, either to an adult, older brother or sister or to themselves. Your help with this is highly appreciated. Please ensure your child’s reading book and diary are in school EVERY DAY.  Please sign their reading record and comment on how well they read (children can read other books, not just school books).  Every child has a 'Reading Buddy' login, they can access a wide range of reading books online and complete fun quizzes at the end!  Please encourage your child to access this valuable resource to further enhance and develop their reading skills.

Times tables - This is an ongoing exercise. Times tables underpin a lot of mathematics so it would be advantageous to the development of your child to keep checking their progress at home. Regular practice on Maths Shed or Hit the Button would be beneficial.

If your child is struggling with any element of their home learning, please send us a message via Class Dojo.

PE

Year 5's PE lessons will take place on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon, please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their full PE kit on these days.

For both boys and girls the following PE kits are required:

• Polo shirt (colour is determined by which house group your child is allocated to)

• Plain black shorts or plain black tracksuit bottoms

• School socks

• Plain black pumps or plain black trainers.

We take huge pride in ensuring that we are smartly dressed and in full uniform. It is very important that children are following the uniform policy and trainers should only be worn on PE days.

If you'd like to take a look at what we are learning about, please see our long term plan in the link below, along with our termly Knowledge Organisers.

We hope that your child has a happy and successful year in Y5. Please remember that children make better progress if teachers and parents work together. Do not be afraid to contact either of us via Class Dojo, phone call or in person if you need any support or have any concerns. We post on dojo regularly and update our class page on the website; please have a look at the work we are doing and to keep up-to-date with messages too. We'll have a great year and make lots of memories along the way!

We can't wait for the year ahead,

The Y5 Team
